GE 2N107 Germanium PNP Alloy Junction AF Amplifier 1955 Your opportunity to OWN piece of Semiconductor History. This transistor is NEW, ande has been in my stock since 1956. This specific is date code on top 5D, (May 1955) one of the earliest Top Hat Styles. Black Metal Pinched Top (Early) In mid 1955, General Electric (GE) introduced the famous PNP 2N107 hobbyist / experimenter transistor. This device was an instant success with young hobbyists and remained popular for two decades, evolving through many different case styles and dropping dramatically in cost. In the 1960s, the Electronic Transistors Company (ETCO) of Flushing NY became a second source supplier of the 2N107. There were countless construction project articles using the 2N107 published in electronics hobbyist magazines throughout the 1950s and 1960s, and many of today’s engineers remember building their first radio or audio amplifier with one of these unique transistors. According to the press release which announced the 2N107, “ A new transistor, designed to meet the demands of radio amateurs, hobbyists and experimenters for a stable, inexpensive transistor has been placed on the market by the General Electric Co……the suggested distributor price of well below $2 for the new 2N107 transistor makes it the least expensive of any transistor currently available.†This transistor became a favorite with hobbyists and experimenters, and many articles appeared in the electronics magazines of the time with projects using the 2N107. The earliest units had the distinctive GE “pinched top†metal case style, while later units were made with the black metal “tophat†style. Like many other hobbyist transistors, the 2N107 was originally developed in an effort to find a sales outlet for the large number of marginally performing “rejects†which were common in the early days of germanium transistor production.
