These items are NEW Motorola MPSW42 (300V NPN 1W TO-92) transistors. The "MP" part (in these MPSW42 transistors) stands for "Motorola Preferred." Preferred devices are Motorola recommended choices for future use and best overall value (from the data sheet). The "S" stands for small signal type. and the "W" stands for these special higher wattage type 42 Motorola preferred transistors. These transistors are an EXCELLENT choice for a single ONE SIZE FOR MANY USES discreet transistor (to get at volume discount pricing). That is: they offer great COMMONALITY of parts (due to their comparatively high voltage rating and higher current rating). For example, for most small signal uses, they make a SAFER and BETTER choice than the more popular PN2222A (40VCEO and 625 mW compared to 300VCEO and 1 Watt), 2N3904 (40VCEO and 625 mW compared to 300VCEO and 1 Watt), etc. etc. The only exception would be for high frequency uses (which would require a Motorola MPFxxx type transistor instead). I use them, for example, as Darlington pairs I looked at the ULN2003 schematic on its data sheet, and adapted the resistor values therein for my circuit. Thus, I have a GOOD, proven general purpose Darlington circuit for ANY use up to 300 Volts and 1 Watt. I use it for square wave generation and simultaneous voltage level shifting (from 5 Volts to about 15 Volts) for directly driving a power MOSFET output stage. Similarly, with a few good amplfier, oscillator, and other circuits at hand, you have a good basis for making MANY design projects quick and easy and fun to do.
